Manual infrastructure changes can work for small teams, but they create memory-based operations. That is risky. When decisions are undocumented, you lose context each time ownership changes.

I introduced lightweight decision records before every meaningful AWS change. Each record answered five questions: problem, options considered, chosen path, tradeoffs, and rollback plan.

Simple documentation speeds delivery

The goal was not paperwork. The goal was faster alignment and safer execution. With one-page records, meetings became shorter because assumptions were visible up front.

It also improved post-change learning. When incidents happened, we reviewed whether the decision itself was weak or execution failed. That distinction improved both architecture quality and operational habits.

Consistency made scaling easier

Once the template was adopted, new contributors could understand system intent quickly. This reduced onboarding friction and created a shared language for risk and cost discussions.

Documented decisions are a leverage point. They make infrastructure work less person-dependent and more resilient over time.
